“Success is no accident” - Pele

Pele was born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23rd, 1940 in Tres Coracoes, Brazil. He received the nickname “Pele” while in school. He grew up in poverty. He worked in tea shops as a servant. He was also taught to play soccer by his father. As a youth he played on several soccer teams.

In 1954 he won the São Paulo state youth championship. In 1955 and 1956 he won the same championship. In 1956 he tried out for the Santos FC. He made the senior team of the Santos FC.

In 1957 he was given a starting place in the first team and, at the age of 16, became the top scorer in the league. He then joined the Brazil national team.

In 1958 he won his 1st major title. Also in 1958 he was apart of the Brazil team and won the FIFA world cup. He was also the youngest player ever in world cup history.

In 1959 he was named best player of the South American Championship. In 1960 Pele was top scorer.

In 1962 they had their most successful season. They won the intercontinental cup.

In 1963 Santos FC became the first Brazilian team to lift the Copa Libertadores in Argentine soil. In 1964 Pele netted 34 goals. In 1965 he finished as the top scorer in the league.

In 1966 he married Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi. In 1967 2 warring factions in the Nigerian civil war agreed on a ceasefire to watch Pele play.

In 1969 Pele scored his 1000th goal. In 1970 he was investigated by the Brazilian military dictatorship for suspected leftism.

In 1974 Pele retired. In 1976 he signed with the New York Cosmos. In 1977 they won the NASL championship. Also in 1977 he had a kidney removed.

In 1981 he appeared in the movie Escape to Victory.

In 1992 he was appointed a UN ambassador for ecology and the environment. In 1995 he was appointed as Extraordinary Minister for Sport. Also in 1995 he was awarded Brazil’s gold medal for outstanding services to sport.

In 1997 he received honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. In 2001 he was accused of corruption.

In 2006 he helped integrate the 2006 FIFA world cup. In 2010 he was the honorary president of the New York Cosmos.

In 2012 he had hip surgery. Also in 2012 he was awarded with an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh.

In 2016 he filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics for violation of his right of publicity.

Today he turns 76 years old and we would all like to say happy birthday Pele.
