Happy Independence Day Cameroon

Cameroon is located in central Africa.

Its capital is Yaounde. Its largest city is Douala. The official languages are French and English. The country is 183,569 square miles. Cameroon is 100% African. 60% of Cameroon practice Christianity, 18% practice Islam, 6% are atheist, 16% practice traditional African religions. The total population is 22,534,532. The climate is tropical. Cameroon is a unitary dominant party presidential republic.

Cameroonian cuisine consists of cocoyams, maize, cassava, millet, plantains, potatoes, rice, and yams.

The major style of music is ambasse bey.

Cameroon’s most popular sport is soccer.

Cameroon was 1st settled in the neolithic era.

The Sao people settled in Cameroon in 500.

In 1472 the Portuguese came to the region, In 1884 Germany colonized the region and named it “Kamerun”.

The Germans enslaved many of the people of the region. In 1919 the country was split into “French Cameroons” and “British Cameroons”. In 1946 independence became a big issue in French Cameroons. In 1955 a guerrilla war began against the French colonizers.

On January 1st, 1960 Cameroon gained its independence.

In 1961 British Cameroons joined with Cameroon. Ahmadou Ahidjo became the 1st president of Cameroon.

In 1966 the Cameroon National Union became the only legal political party. In 1982 Paul Biya became the president.

In the mid 1980’s an economic crisis took place in the country. In 2008 a transport union strike in Douala escalated into violent protests in 31 municipal areas.

In 2014 Cameroon declared war on Boko Haram. Today marks the 57th anniversary of Cameroon’s independence and we would all like to say happy independence day Cameroon.
