Benjamin Banneker was born on November 9th, 1731 in Baltimore County, Maryland, USA. In 1737 Banneker was named on the deed of his family’s 100 acre farm. In 1749 he started to write a series of journals.

In 1753 he completed a wooden clock that struck on the hour. He was also taught astronomy from his father. In 1759 his father died. In 1788 he was loaned books and equipment to study astronomy more.

In 1791 he was hired to survey the boundaries of a new federal district which became Washington D.C. In 1792 he released the Almanac.

In 1793 he released a 2nd Almanac. The Almanac also contained poetry by Phillis Wheatley. Also in 1793 he wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson on slavery and racial equality. In 1795 he released another Almanac. In 1797 he released his last Almanac.

On October 9th, 1806 Benjamin Banneker died of old age in Baltimore County, Maryland, USA. He was 74 years old.
