Jimi Hendrix was born as Johnny Hendrix on November 27th, 1942 in Seattle, Washington, USA.

In 1946 his name was changed to “James Hendrix”. His family frequently moved around Seattle. When Hendrix was 9 years his parents divorced. In 1957 he found a ukulele while working with his father and began to play it. In 1958 his mother died. At 15 years old he started to play acoustic guitar. He then formed a band called “The Velvetones”. In 1959 he got an electric guitar.

His 1st gig was in a synagogue basement. He then joined another band called “The Rocking Kings”. In 1961 he joined the army. He was verbally and physically abused due to his obsession over his guitar.

In 1962 he was awarded the screaming eagles patch. He was the honorably discharged from the army. In 1963 he moved to Tennessee and formed a band called “The King Kasuals”. Hendrix then started to learn to play guitar with his teeth. Hendrix also played backup for artists like Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. Hendrix then moved to Harlem. In 1964 he won the 1st prize in the Apollo amatuer contest. He then became a guitarist for the Isley Brothers. He later joined Little Richard’s band.

In 1965 he made his 1st TV appearance with Little Richard’s band. He was fired from Little Richard’s band due to disputes. He then joined “Curtis Knight and the Squires”. In 1966 he moved to Greenwich Village. Also in 1966 he moved to London and started to form his band “The Experience”. His band had its 1st gig at the Novelty in Evreux. They were signed to Track Records and the 1st single “Hey Joe” was released. Also in 1966 Hendrix 1st started to use LSD.

In 1967 they released “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary”. During a performance to end the show he lit his guitar on fire.

The same year they released the album “Are You Experienced”. Also in the same year they released their 2nd album “Axis: Bold as Love”. Hendrix wanted to show his Native American heritage on the cover of the album but when he told them to portray “American Indian” themes they used actual Indian themes. Also in 1967 Hendrix began to regularly smoke Marijuana and use LSD while on tour. In 1968 they released “Electric Ladyland”. It reached No. 1 in the USA. He also released the singles “All Along the Watchtower” and “Voodoo Chile”. Also in 1968 Hendrix was involved in a brawl due to him being drunk.

In 1969 the Experience broke up. Also in 1969 he was the world’s highest paid Rock musician. He also performed at Rock concert “Woodstock”. He played the “Star Spangled Banner” at the concert.

Also in 1969 he was arrested for drug charges in Canada. He was acquitted of the charges. In 1970 he released “Band of Gypsys”. He then released the single “Stepping Stone”. Also in 1970 he made his own recording studio called “Electric Lady Studios”. He made his last performance with the band “War”.

On September 18th, 1970 Jimi Hendrix died of asphyxia while intoxicated in London, England. He was 27 years old.

Today is his 74th birthday and we would all like to say happy birthday and rest in peace Jimi Hendrix.
