Happy Birthday Chuck D

Chuck D was born as Carlton Ridenhour on August 1st, 1960 in Queens, New York, USA. Ridenhour attended Adelphi University in Long Island. While in college he met William Drayton who would become Flavor Flav. In 1984 he received a B.F.A.

In 1986 he formed the group “Public Enemy”.

In 1987 the group released its 1st album “Yo! Bum Rush the Show”. In 1988 they released their 2nd album “It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back”.

In 1989 they released the song “Fight the Power” for the soundtrack of the movie Do the Right Thing (1989). Also in 1989 he appeared on the song “Tweakin’” by George Clinton.

In 1990 they released the album “Fear of a Black Planet”. In 1991 they released the album “Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black”.

In 1994 they released “Muse Sick n Hour Mess Age”. In 1996 he released his 1st solo album “Autobiography of Mistachuck”.

In 1997 he released the book Fight the Power: Rap Race and Reality. In 1998 they released the album “He Got Game” for the movie He Got Game (1998).

Also in 1998 Chuck D settled out in court with the Notorious B.I.G.’s estate for the Notorious B.I.G. using one of Chuck D’s songs without his permission. In 1999 he launched a multi format "supersite" on the web site Rapstation.com. In 2004 his voice appeared in the video game “Grand Theft Auto San Andreas”.

In 2010 he released the album “I Don’t Rhyme for the Sake of Riddlin’”.

In 2013 he earned an honorary doctorate from Adelphi University.

Also in 2013 his group Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. In 2014 he released the album “The Black in Man”.

In 2016 Chuck D started touring with the band Prophets of Rage.

Today he turns 57 years old and we would all like to say happy birthday Chuck D.

Happy Birthday Spike Lee

Spike Lee was born as Shelton Lee on March 20th, 1957 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. As a child his family moved to Brooklyn, NY. He then got the nickname “Spike” as a child.

Lee attended Morehouse college in Atlanta, GA. He graduated with a BA from Morehouse in Mass Communication. In 1985 Lee began on his 1st feature film She’s Gotta Have It. The film released in 1986 and earned $7 million at the US box office.

In 1989 Lee’s film Do the Right Thing (1989) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

In 1990 Lee’s film Mo’ Better Blues was accused of antisemitism by the Anti-Defamation League and several film critics. Lee denied the charges, Lee said that he would not release an anti semitic film because Jews run Hollywood. In 1991 Lee taught a course at Harvard about filmmaking. In 1993 Lee began to teach at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. In the mid 90’s Lee produced TV commercials for Levi’s jeans. Also Spike Lee joined with Michael Jordan to promote Air Jordan sneakers.

In 1997 Lee’s film 4 Little Girls was nominated for the Best Feature Documentary Academy Award. In 2007 Spike Lee was honored with the San Francisco Film Society's Directing Award. In 2008 he received the Wexner Prize. In 2012 after the shooting of Trayvon Martin, Spike Lee was one of many people who used Twitter to circulate a message which claimed to give the home address of the shooter George Zimmerman.

In 2013 Lee won The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize. In 2015 Lee received an Academy Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contributions to film. Lee is the director, writer, and producer of the MyCareer story mode in the video game NBA 2K16.

Happy Birthday Jim Brown

Jim Brown was born as James Nathaniel Brown, February 17th, 1936 in St. Simons, Georgia, USA. Brown was a great athlete in high school receiving 13 letters from colleges for football, lacrosse, baseball, basketball and track. In 1953 he attended Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY.

He was a unanimous all American in football. He also played basketball, track, and lacrosse during college. In 1957 Brown was taken in the 1st round NFL draft to the Cleveland Browns. He played for the Browns for 9 years. Within those 9 years he was the NFL record holder for both single-season (1,863 in 1963) and career rushing (12,312 yards), as well as the all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (106), total touchdowns (126), and all-purpose yards (15,549). He was the first player ever to reach the 100-rushing-touchdowns milestone, and only a few others have done so since. Brown holds the record for total seasons leading the NFL in all-purpose yards (5: 1958–1961, 1964), and is the only rusher in NFL history to average over 100 yards per game for a career.

In addition to his rushing, Brown was a superb receiver out of the backfield, catching 262 passes for 2,499 yards and 20 touchdowns, while also adding another 628 yards returning kickoffs.Every season he played, Brown was voted into the Pro Bowl, and he left the league by scoring three touchdowns in his final Pro Bowl game. Brown's 1,863 rushing yards in the 1963 season remain a Cleveland franchise record. It is currently the oldest franchise record for rushing yards out of all 32 NFL teams. His average of 133 yards per game that season is exceeded only by O.J. Simpson's 1973 season. In 1964 the Cleveland Browns won the NFL championship.

In 1964 Brown began an acting career and played a buffalo soldier in the movie Rio Conchos. Brown retired July of 1966.

In 1971 Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brown’s most memorable roles were in the movies The Dirty Dozen (1967), and I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988). In 1978 Brown served as a color analyst on NFL telecasts. In 1989 Brown published his autobiography titled Out of Bounds.

In 1988 he founded the Amer-I-Can program where he worked with youth caught up in gangs in Los Angeles, CA. In 1993, Brown was hired as a color commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a role he occupied for the first six pay-per-view events.

In 1999 Brown was convicted of misdemeanor vandalism for damaging his wife’s car and served several months in jail.

In 2002 director Spike Lee released a documentary on Jim Brown’s life called Jim Brown: All-American.

In 2008, Brown initiated a lawsuit against Sony and EA Sports for using his likeness in the Madden NFL video game series without his consent.

On May 29, 2013 Brown was named special advisor to the Cleveland Browns.
