Happy Birthday Chuck D

Chuck D was born as Carlton Ridenhour on August 1st, 1960 in Queens, New York, USA. Ridenhour attended Adelphi University in Long Island. While in college he met William Drayton who would become Flavor Flav. In 1984 he received a B.F.A.

In 1986 he formed the group “Public Enemy”.

In 1987 the group released its 1st album “Yo! Bum Rush the Show”. In 1988 they released their 2nd album “It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back”.

In 1989 they released the song “Fight the Power” for the soundtrack of the movie Do the Right Thing (1989). Also in 1989 he appeared on the song “Tweakin’” by George Clinton.

In 1990 they released the album “Fear of a Black Planet”. In 1991 they released the album “Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black”.

In 1994 they released “Muse Sick n Hour Mess Age”. In 1996 he released his 1st solo album “Autobiography of Mistachuck”.

In 1997 he released the book Fight the Power: Rap Race and Reality. In 1998 they released the album “He Got Game” for the movie He Got Game (1998).

Also in 1998 Chuck D settled out in court with the Notorious B.I.G.’s estate for the Notorious B.I.G. using one of Chuck D’s songs without his permission. In 1999 he launched a multi format "supersite" on the web site Rapstation.com. In 2004 his voice appeared in the video game “Grand Theft Auto San Andreas”.

In 2010 he released the album “I Don’t Rhyme for the Sake of Riddlin’”.

In 2013 he earned an honorary doctorate from Adelphi University.

Also in 2013 his group Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. In 2014 he released the album “The Black in Man”.

In 2016 Chuck D started touring with the band Prophets of Rage.

Today he turns 57 years old and we would all like to say happy birthday Chuck D.

Happy Birthday George Clinton

George Clinton was born on July 22nd, 1941 in Kannapolis, North Carolina, USA. He grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. During his teen years Clinton formed a doo wop group called The Parliaments.

In the early 1960’s Clinton was a staff songwriter for Motown. Clinton changed the name of the Parliaments to “Parliament” and “Funkadelic”.

Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic dominated diverse music during the 1970s with over 40 R&B hit singles and 3 platinum albums.

In 1982 Clinton became a solo artist. He also produced albums for Bootsy Collins and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The primary reason for recording under his own name was due to legal difficulties with his record label. Also in 1982 Clinton signed to Capitol Records under 2 names, his own as a solo artist and as the P-Funk All-Stars. The same year he released the album “Computer Games”. The single “Atomic Dog” reached #1 on the R&B charts and #101 on the pop charts.

In 1985 he was recruited by the Red Hot Chili Peppers to produce their album “Freaky Styley”. Also during the 1980’s many hip-hop and rap artists cited Clinton's earlier music as an influence.

His music was sampled heavily by many Hip Hop artists. In 1989 he released the album “The Cinderella Theory”.

In 1990 he appeared in the movie Graffiti Bridge. Also in 1990 Clinton appeared in the movie House Party.

In 1993 he released “Hey Man, Smell My Finger”. In 1994 he appeared in the movie PCU. Also in 1994 Clinton did a song with Ice Cube called “Bop Gun”.

In 1995 Clinton made a song with 2 Pac called “Can’t C Me”. In 1996 he released “T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership)”. In 1997 he appeared in the movie Good Burger.

In 1999 he appeared in the movie The Breaks. In 2007 Clinton featured on Snoop Dogg’s album “Tha Blue Carpet Treatment”.

In 2008 Clinton released “George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love”. In 2009 George Clinton was awarded the Urban Icon Award from Broadcast Music Incorporated. Also in 2009 Clinton was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. In 2015 Clinton made a song with Kendrick Lamar called “Wesley’s Theory”.

Anniversary of Roger Troutman's Death

Roger Troutman was born on November 29th 1951 in Hamilton, Ohio, USA. He first started playing the guitar as a child.Troutman formed a band called The Human Body.

In 1979 the group was signed to George Clinton’s record label and name was changed to Zapp. In 1980 Zapp signed to Warner Bros. records. Also in 1980 Zapp released their 1st album “Zapp”. The single “More Bounce to the Ounce” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart.

In 1981 Troutman released his 1st solo album “The Many Facets of Roger”. The single “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” reached No. 1 on the R&B Singles chart.

In 1984 Troutman released his 2nd album “The Saga Continues”. Between 1980 and 1985 Zapp released the gold selling albums Zapp, Zapp II, Zapp III and The New Zapp IV U and multiple top ten R&B hit singles. In 1987 Troutman released his most successful solo album “Unlimited!”.

By 1989 Zapp grew to 15 members. In 1989 Zapp released the album “Zapp Vibe” which performed poorly. In 1993 Troutman was featured on Snoop Dogg’s album “Doggystyle”. In 1995 Troutman collaborated with Eazy E on the album “Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton”. Also in 1995 Troutman collaborated with Dr. Dre and 2 Pac on the song “California Love”. The song became Troutman's biggest selling and most successful single to date as the song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Troutman won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

On April 25th, 1999 in Dayton, Ohio, USA Roger Troutman was shot and killed after an argument with his brother who then later committed suicide the same day. He was 47 years old.

Today is the 18th anniversary of his death. Take time to remember this great musical artist today.
