Anniversary of Nat Turner's Death

Nat Turner was born on October 2nd, 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia, USA. He was born into slavery. In 1810 his master died and he was given to his master’s brother. At a young age he learned to read and write. He was also very religious. At 22 years old Turner had a vision from God that he should run away from his master. He returned to his owner a month later.

Turner would conduct church services for the other slaves on the plantation. They called him “The Prophet”. In 1828 he had a vision that he had a great purpose from God. In February of 1831 there was a solar eclipse which Turner interpreted as a Black man’s hand blocking out the sun. He planned the slave revolt to happen on July 4th but postponed it due to him being sick. In August of 1831 Turner began his revolt.

Turner and his fellow slaves went from house to house freeing the slaves and killing their masters. There was 70 Black people involved in the revolt. They were able to kill 60 Whites before the revolt was suppressed after 2 days. Turner escaped into the woods and wasn’t found until October.

He was sentenced to death for conspiring to rebel and making an insurrection. On November 11th, 1831 Nat Turner was executed by hanging in Jerusalem, Virginia, USA. He was 31 years old.
